Many people today are buying natural soy candles because these candles seem to offer better indoor air quality and fewer risks of lead exposure. Some people are buying natural soy candles because in many cases these candles burn better and are more fragrant than their cheap paraffin counterparts. While natural soy candles can be a pleasure, they also burn a little differently, follow these simple tips:
1. Light your candles in a well-ventilated room and do not place too many candles in one room. Although natural soy candles can mean far less soot than paraffin candles, some soot is inevitable when you burn anything.
2. Trim the wick on your natural soy candles to about 5mm each time before lighting. This will make your candles smoke less and burn slower, allowing you to enjoy your natural soy candles longer.
3. Watch your lit candles around children, pets and flammable materials. Pets and animals can be curious about the flame and flammable objects can move with a draft into the heat of the flame.
4. Never leave any burning candle unattended. Accidents do happen, even with the best manufactured candles.
5. When not in use, keep your natural soy candles in a dark, dry spot. Moisture can affect the wick, while sunlight can fade both the color and scent.
6. Use your natural soy candles promptly. Don’t keep your candles on a shelf for years, hoping for a special occasion. Even the most luxurious candles are meant to be used and enjoyed. If you wait years, some of the fragrance and color may fade, even when the candle is stored correctly and the wax may dry out, affecting burn time.
7. Read any manufacturer instructions and follow them carefully. That’s what they’re there for.
8. Place natural soy candles at least 15 cm apart. The heat from neighboring candles can soften the wax too much, causing the candle to lose fragrance or burn too quickly or unevenly.
9. Once you extinguish your natural soy candles, let them cool and harden completely before relighting. If you don’t, the candle may burn unevenly.
10. The best way to extinguish natural soy candles is with a special wick dipper. You simply push the wick into the pool of wax with the dipper and then pull the wick up. This process helps keep smoke at bay and allows you to enjoy your natural soy candles longer, too.
11. Don’t burn natural soy candles with their packaging still on. Stickers and other decorations on the candle can heat and even burn. Read the directions if you are not sure what to remove.
12. Use candle holders. Not only are they very attractive, but they also keep your natural soy candles steady and safe. Place your candles – in their candle-holders on a stable surface. Make sure that the surface will not be affected by heat. If you want to place your natural soy candles on a delicate table, make sure that you use a candle holder that will protect your furnishings.
13. Protect your natural soy candles from drafts, vents and air currents. These will make your candle burn unevenly, and can be downright dangerous if a moving flame comes into contact with something flammable.
